By Genres

The Genres are listed in alphabetical order. A particular romance can have up to two genre classifications here on GRR. Obviously this is not a complete list, as one can also include tropes like "highlander", "LGBTQ", "MFM" as genres.

Bad Boy

A dirty-talking, alpha guy who's seen as a bad influence (including manwhore) but when needed, will do anything to protect the FMC

BDSM

Used somewhat inaccurately, this actually just means "kink" (includes spanking and light bondage) in general usage. True BDSM (bondage, discipline sadism masochism) is something far more serious and is a lifestyle.

Billionaire

Ultra-rich guy who's either a playboy or workaholic, but knows how to treat a woman right... if he wanted to.

Contemporary

Just "present day" kinda love in a normal city  (also see "small town")

Dark

Generally involves an anti-hero, and the FMC was kidnapped and held hostage. May involved brain-washing and physical attack to convert/break the FMC for something else.

Erotic Romance aka Romantica

Sex is a part of the overall relationship and there are a lot of sex.

Historical

Romance set in the past, the more romantic periods. Also see Regency

Military

One or both main characters is current or ex-military and that reflects in their relationship, including PTSD, training, and so on.

Paranormal

Involving shifters, witches, or any sort of magical creatures. Werewolves, vampires, werebears and such are common tropes.

Regency

A sub-type of historical

Small Town

Occurs in a small town (a few hundred people) where everybody knows everybody else

Suspense aka Romantic Suspense

Thriller where a couple must solve a tense situation, often involving their lives

Science Fiction

Generally involving aliens, futuristic gadgets, time travel, and so on (unless they're traveling backwards in time, which then makes it historical). Time travel itself is considered a trope.

Spiritual

Spiritual romance has a heavy dose of religion (non-denominational Christian) and no sex.

Western

Generally involving a large ranch and cowboys and horses, often set in Montana, Wyoming, Arkansas, or Texas, but may also involve a cowboy/cowgirl living in the city

Western Historical

Set in the old West, it could be about life on the frontier, "mail order brides", trail brides, or similar situations.
