Evie Baker had a crush on Matt Girard and even gave him her v-card before he left, but she ended up as the town's laughingstock when the news leaked. Ten years later, after a bad op, Matt's back in town, and Evie's hot for him as ever. She had to close her restaurant because her partner David stole all the money from the business and destroyed her. So when Evie's sister went missing, and then David was found dead on her doorstep, Evie had no one except Matt to uncover a conspiracy to retrieve data she did not even know she had.
Evie and Matt did seem to have some chemistry, but at times, Evie suffers "too stupid to live" moments that you'd want to reach through the pages and strangle her. Despite total lack of training (she's a chef after all) she insists on following Matt (who's a trained soldier) on missions, then refused to follow orders. Later, her refusal lead to them to be captured by bad guys. That's just... idiotic.
Compared to Evie, Matt's problem is very light... the "foot-in-mouse" disease, i.e. constantly said something that could be taken the wrong way.
I commend the author, who had an ex-military husband, for getting the military details right. But that doesn't compensate for having characters who are reckless and idiotic.
