Donna was a resident but left many years ago, but now she's back to care for grandma Chauvin. Jake, a part of the Benedict clan, is a general handyman. When Donna wanted to get a Christmas tree for grandma Chauvin's Christmas and went to an abandoned property, she was stopped by Jake, who actually just bought the lot and had special plans for the tree. Donna did not mention that the pair had unfinished business from a very long time ago... all the way back in high school. When a rabbit and a pothole conspired to crash Jake's dirt bike, Donna was right there to help, and the two developed a love-hate relationship that perhaps will finally resolve those feelings from a long time ago...
The reluctant love / unrequited love from a long time ago bleeding into the present day, and feel very genuine, with grandma Chauvin "helping things along" can be quite hilarious and heart-warming at the same time. There are also, of course, a lot of other characters making wry observations like brothers and cousins ought to. It's a fun and cozy read for the holiday mood.
