Cyrus Decker, formerly of Pinkertons, was fired for breaking rules, and after losing his parents, tried to run the family ranch with his sister. However, their partly Comanche heritage made it difficult to live around town, even as the town sheriff needed Cyrus' experience in solving local crimes (and thus get the hate of the rest of the deputies). Cyrus figured the only way he can live is to find a wife who can actually help run the ranch... and low and behold, a farmer's widow, Leigh Hawthron is available. So she heads out, and single-handed turned over the ranch into profitability within a year... but she had a secret that almost caused Cyrus to cancel the engagement, even as they realize they like each other very much.
It was pretty obvious that Cyrus really wanted to be a detective rather than rancher, and his heart wasn't really into the marriage, but he'd welcome it. Leigh, on the other hand, wanted a chance to prove herself as a capable owner of a farm/ranch and she got one. There really isn't much that keep them apart as both quickly acknowledged each other's tough circumstances. There are some further adventures such as murder and hostage negotiation and other stuff but nothing that really threatened their love other than that secret mentioned before. There is no recognizable darkest hour or grand gesture before the HEA ending.
