I find it hard to rate One Last Hold, which was supposed to be romantic suspense but the gear shift into mystery then back into suspense was way too jarring.
Caitlyn was there at Wesley's greatest failure, a secret that was covered up, and she left. Now Caitlyn's back as a reporter, and Wesley just crashed out after a bad crash with his chief rival Chad. Hours later, Chad's stabbed to death, and circumstantial evidence seems to point at Wesley. Caitlyn did not want to ruin Wesley, and in fact, wanted to get back together... if it's at all possible. But the more they dig, they more they realize it dated back to secrets even before that incident, into secrets that people wanted to keep buried... and may kill for...
The problem with this book is somewhere during the book, it shifted gear (pardon the metaphor) from romantic suspense into mystery, and the mystery wasn't about the two main characters (Wesley and Caitlyn), but rather, what was being covered up with Chad's death. The romance was pretty much forgotten, as the book basically switch to be about the mystery and twist rather than the actual romance. The ending was so rushed to get the HEA I almost got whiplash.
