GRR Reviews Lost Fortune (The Unbridled Series) by Sandra E Sinclair
Lost Fortune was a historical romance that relied on "instant-chemistry" to set the plot forward that somehow just did not ring true, and the nemesis was way to shallow as to be almost comical rather than evil.
Rilla returned from France after eight years abroad to her home in Boston, and a chance encounter on the train with a man named Calvin Dalton left her breathless. She went home, only to discover that her life has been a lie. She was the illegitimate child of a tryst, and while she was provided for, there was a half brother after her portion of the inheritance, believing he deserved it all. She fled west to her holding, as she must find someone to marry to ensure she gets her inheritance as stipulated in the will, but her half-brother hired a Pinkerton agent to find his money... the Pinkerton man Calvin Dalton. Calvin found Rilla and her mansion on the West Coast, and realized the gravity of the situation. Her half-brother is heartless and intended to ruin her by revealing her illegitimacy, thus ruining her chance at marriage and inheritance, but he had a duty to fulfill his contract. Is there a way to do both, now that he's thinking of her day and night? There is only one way forward...
Frankly, the twist at the end was almost groan-worthy as it was such a cliche. The woman can't do anything and relied on a man to save her. And this series was supposed to be about a strong woman (thus "Unbridled series)? Nah.
