Sorcha: Clover Springs Mail Order Bride is one in a long series where the brides keep coming to Clover Springs. Sorcha arrived with not so much homemaking skills, but was quick to learn despite her young age, and eventually found love, thorugh kindness of her heart and helped achieve redemption for her husband's soul as well. But the stories feels like separate adventures joined together and barely linked back together.
To recap... Sorcha Matthews was eighteen and living with Boston orphanage, but she's about to come of age, and her only prospect seems to be with a creepy employer... except becoming a mail order bride. She had originally corresponded with a ranch hand but he was tragically killed in an accident. Desperate to flee on a timetable, she took the next available spot... Also to Clover Springs... to the widower Brian Peterson and his two daughters. Brian believed God was punishing him for sins of his father by taking away his wife and child in the flood years ago. He wanted a housekeeper, but he'll take a wife in name only, for he had no love to give. Upon arrival, Sorcha's lack of homemaking skills was evident, and the older daughter was downright hostile to Sorcha. But Sorcha's patience was slowly paying off, and when a desperate Indian mother and her two kids came to take shelter, Sorcha took them in and made friends. Then the measles epidemic swept through town, and the Indian herbs helped saved the older daughter, just as Brian returned from a business trip, for him to confront his past, his father's past, and his relationship with Sorcha...
I found Brian way too angst-y and down for someone with so much business to do, and the adventures of Sorcha even when she's just making homes to be a bit melo-dramatic, but it was needed to get the story rolling, but the link between the adventures and how to turn Brian around to be open to love was a bit tenuous and the hook wasn't quite there, IMHO.
