GRR Reviews Promise Me: A Second Chance Romance by Vivian Wood
Promise me showed some promise, but the psych profile of the guy makes no sense, and therefore, neither does the plot.
The story can be roughly summarized as: Guy loves girl, guy leaves girl for military and told her not to wait. Guy f***ed up, got kicked out of the military, and is back in town and wants the girl back. She ain't gonna let him break her heart again, but eventually relents and let him in again.
The plot sort of makes sense, but the male main character doesn't, because the guy was back after only made it four years in the military. That means he BARELY finished his enlistment, despite having spent a whole year training to become a SEAL.
SPOILER AHEAD
The guy didn't go out with his team one day, and his team got slaughtered. He got a case of survivor's guilt so bad ("I should have been there, it's all my fault"), he's no longer mission effective, so the commander packed him up and sent him home. What happened to counseling? What happened to SEAL's own support network of veterans? Why did he even come home, as he's basically unemployed, and so damaged he can't even do the job he was trained to? How can a SEAL be this pathetic? Why does he think coming home would solve anything? What happened to his grief? WHY does he want his girl now? Does this character make any sense?
And what's wrong with the girl? It's pretty much a couple words from him and she's tempted to get it back together.
Add it all together, and it really made no sense. It's angst-y, but the setup is all wrong.
