GRR Reviews Angels & Whiskey (Saddles & Racks Book by Kimberly Knight

Angels and Whiskey was definitely an above average romantic suspense treading on a popular trope: a damaged (in the heart) hero protecting a damaged (in the body) woman. Unfortunately, the ending fizzled with a deus ex machina, relegating it to an "also ran". There are also some factual problems with the beginning.

US Army Captain Gabriel Hastings retired as a broken hearted man, having lost his love during the war. He swore he will never love again, and needing to make a living, he was recruited into a male escort business... providing the perfect date for ladies who wanted it their way. His life changed when he ran into an angel called Autumn. Autumn Jones had a perfect life on the surface. She has a powerful and rich husband... who knew how to mistreat her but leave no visible marks. He had her car tracked, and filled their house with hidden cameras. He also had spies everywhere. With no control over money, she cannot escape, and if she complained or was late returning, she was punished. When Gabe spotted Autumn's bruises, he knew he had to protect her, and when he found out who Autumn's husband is, Gabe will stop at nothing...

Without spoiling the story, let's just say the abuser was "solved" by someone OTHER than Gabe or Autumn.

There are also some factual problems with the beginning of the story. MEDEVAC was misspelled at least once, and operating procedure was not followed. The area was NOT rendered secure before calling in the MEDEVAC. Furthermore, "patch up the bullet holes on each soldier with enough gauze" was NOT what MEDEVAC was supposed to do. That should have been done by the local medics as first aid. The MEDEVAC was just there as transport and to make sure the patients survive the transport process. Finally, MEDEVAC choppers are NOT ARMED! They have red crosses on them as per Geneva convention! (Tsk, tsk)

All in all, nothing too interesting with this book. It showed some promise, but needs a better beginning and ending.
