Love Sprung From Hate by Sienna Blake is a retelling of Romeo a Juliet, reimagined as a Mafia vs. Police romantic drama. This is only volume 1 of a three-parter so there is a cliffhanger at the end of this volume. I also think violence is a bit too casual, and this volume did not end at a good place to stand on its own. The insta-lust was slightly forced.
Roman just wanted to attend his brother's funeral, then go back to Europe. He wanted nothing to do with his family business... The mob, esp. when it got his brother killed. Juliana just wanted to be treated seriously as a detective in the Verona police department, even though the chief was her father, and death of her mother made her abandon her law degree to turn to criminal justice. The two should have never met, but his escape (from his father's goons) brought him into her orbit, and the attraction is instant. They spent a full night together, reveling in their discovery of each other, neither wanted to talk about family or responsibilities. But before he can leave for Europe, he was forced to join his father in the business... and a street war is about to erupt between the Mafia factions. When a mid-level goon in a rival organization was found beaten and shot... Roman and Juliana found they were on opposite sides... and somehow, nobody knew their secret liaison... yet...
The twists are good, but somehow the novel just arbitrarily ended rather than end at a place where the first volume can stand on its own. Also, the Hollywood scenes like the way Roman was initiated into the family business, or the way how his father's goons just blocked his car on the freeway on the way to the airport, seems over the top. The way the Roman and Juliana decided to fall for each other was way too insta-lust but then, that was how Romeo and Juliet was, right?
All in all, due to the way story just arbitrarily ended, I can't give this more than 3/5.
