A Rancher's Surrender sets itself apart with a different sort of FMC in this historical western romantic suspense, though the twist may have been advertised a bit too early.
Jillian Matthews was trained by her father to be a great veterinarian, but she was refused a diploma by the school, and nobody would let her practice out east. She could marry, but the fiancee demanded she give up her dream. She applied to be the new town vet all the way out in Montana using only her initials, hoping that frontier folks are less picky, but it wasn't to be. Widower Wade Parker was the first to find that the veterinarian he hired was a woman when Jillian was able to save the newborn calf with an emergency c-section, but the mama cow passed away the next day. Wade was angry because he was tricked, and the fact Jillian is beautiful and smart and a very competent vet made it only worse. When the town turned on her, and harassment began, Wade realized she's the only vet that would come this far, and decided to protect her... then someone escalated...
This tale of enemies to lovers was pretty good, and the town started to mess with her was pretty good as well. However, as I said before, I think the 'twist' later was telegraphed a little too early. And let's just say someone in town ain't got all his marbles.
