GRR Reviews Hearts on Fire by Julia Gabriel
Becca Trevor was adopted and always knew she didn't belong... and bad luck followed her, even when she's trying to do the right things. She tried to help a girl being harassed... and was fired because the harasser was the boss's brother. Her BF is in jail, and she just got evicted because her BF stole the rent money too. She went back to St. Caroline, only to have her mom's quilt shop burn down around her. And she can never tell her family why she left town and went to Ohio... // Jack Wolfe was the golden boy of St. Caroline, destined to be the smart one in the family, went to Ivy League school and Law school... then work in California as a lawyer for a startup. In reality he dropped out, and is barely making ends meet as a security guard and volunteer firefighter... in a family of firefighters. Telling his mom would break her heart, but his mom is already dying of ovarian cancer, and it's already terminal. // Becca's back in town, and seeing Jack and finding his secrets (he dropped out) made her despair... She left town to protect his future and his reputation... and it was for NOTHING... seven years ago. That one drunken night after a party... produced a daughter, and Becca let a woman adopt her. But now, that woman is dying of breast cancer, and she wanted Becca to take her daughter back... even as Jack's mom may be going any moment... will the biggest mistake in Jack and Becca's lives break them forever... or be the one thing that unites three families?
Very sad and very poignant, but I am not sure I feel the LOVE between the two characters beyond the typical stuff. It's the extra stuff like taking her daughter back that makes things special.
Category: Contemporary
Primary Plot: Woman is back in town, and met the boy who she gave up everything for... only to find he had thrown it all away. But there may be a chance to redeem all of them if she can share that huge secret that drove her away 7 years ago...
Overall Rating: 4/5
