Mary had a horrible mother that she's afraid she'll turn out to be the same. So she refused to have any kids, and that destroyed her last relationship. She prefers to run her Christmas program, as a part of a large charity, and do tax returns. She encountered Luke, an electrician, at one of her projects, and he's persistent. Mary enjoys the attention. When Luke's name popped up as both a proposed charity recipient and as a charity host (to help poor families have a Christmas feast and party and gifts) Mary was intrigued. So she went to find a trailer... and found Luke... with his two kids. Turns out Luke's a widower, and Mary immediately took herself out of the relationship... But Luke won't let her walk away. He will be leaving soon, and his kids want Mary for every minute they can. And Mary couldn't say no... And Luke is hiding a secret that can change everything...
Ah, nice. Lots of layers to both characters. Both are wounded, albeit in very different ways, and they fit together quite nicely, even though their respective coping mechanisms for their wound made them say "no way". Mary doesn't believe she's mother material, and Luke threw himself into work after his loss (even though he didn't need to and dragged his children around the country that he didn't even realize his children are getting tired of his nomadic lifestyle. It took Mary to wake him up to that fact. The darkest hour was reasonable, compounded by the time pressure and the kids. 5/5
