She left it all behind, and went to a different city to seek a little help from a brother-in-law. She didn't expect to find an gruff alpha that will sweep her off her feet... // Greyson is busy expanding Sokolov Security and onboarding the rookies. He has no time to babysit boss's sister-in-law and the new office manager, but helping her get started would free him from the desk work he detested. He wasn't ready for Amie, or the protective feelings she evoked from him... or how he wanted to make her his forever...

Eh... didn't feel much.  3/5

GRR Reviews Hot Mess by Emily Goodwin

Lexi is a single mom raising two daughters. She has a bit of a crush on her boss as the dream man, and she edits novels for a living. When a girls-night-out with friends lead her to meet a hot as sin bad boy bartender, it's a perfect night for a one-night-stand. That is until she learned that he's her boss' ex-firefighter brother, and this hot guy wants her for more than one night. This can get VERY complicated indeed. Now she's caught between her fantasy and her reality, and it's definitely a hot mess.

Good setup, good conflict, seems to be all there. There are some self-inadequacy issues at the beginning, but that's something to be grown out of. 4.5/5

GRR Reviews Let Me Please You by Alexandria House

Kat was surrounded by alpha brothers and divorced. The entire family are overachievers, and Kat was no exception. Being a taller woman, Kat found only one guy that matches her... Tommy, her brother's bodyguard, who's even taller. But for Tommy, Kat's his boss' little sister and definitely off-limits... Until she made her intentions VERY VERY clear...  She has needs, and they are both consenting adults...

Ah, a bodyguard romance that is NOT romantic suspense. That's unusual in itself. But also, the family is Black-American, and that means a very different romance culture and very different vocabulary. The book however, feels a little thin on the details. I guess this used to be a portion of a different book (McClain brothers Book 3), and should be enjoyed together.

GRR Reviews Rival Temptation by Athena Braveheart

Luke shouldn't want Max, as she's not only his best friend David's sister, she's also a fellow lawyer. David's also his boss.  But Max, a recent law school graduate, is working at the company, and let's just say their initial meeting had him come across as a misogynistic douchebag. And when the apology to that turned into a kiss... sparks fly, but they're not sure if it's the explosive kind... or the loving kind. Heck, it may be both... But Luke and Max will make an interesting couple... If they don't kill each other first... Or maybe David will do that first...

Good touches and push-pull, and the book continues even after they got married. Nice.

GRR Reviews Nobody's Lost by Kallypso Masters

Ryder returned from multiple deployments as a recon marine to the Middle East, having felt guilt and shame, for letting his team down. He lived a lonely life with PTSD. But when his Master Sergeant Adam aka "Top" asked him for a favor, he can't refuse. It's to watch out for Top's little half-sister... // Megan has military brothers who are protective, but she can handle herself just fine. When someone stole her PC, despite a sophisticated alarm system, her marine brother Adam sent her Ryder as a bodyguard. But soon she realized Ryder needs more rescue than she does, and what started as a friendship grew hotter. But she's Top's sister, and she wasn't sure she wanted a relationship...

Ah, the reluctant friends to lovers to scorching sex, with just a hint of S/M (unlike her other books). Nice, very nice indeed. It's just that the twist later kinda and kinda not make sense. But I won't spoil it. You'll just have to read it.

GRR Reviews Worth the Trouble by Jamie Beck

Catherine "Cat" is a cover girl and her beauty is renowned. However, she's hiding a huge secret... even from her own family. Attending her brother's wedding just makes her sad, but she's perfected the art of smiling even when she's not feeling it. Until she ran into Hank... who's soft-spoken and gentle, a man she should want, but can't. // Hank understood sacrifice, having set aside his own ambitions to help out his family. Having once been rejected by Cat, he's not eager to repeat the experience, but when Cat's drunken behavior prompted him doing a white knight rescue, Cat's ephipany, about needing her own business and income after her beauty fades lead her to offer him a dream job: creating custom furniture, instead of just doing general carpentry work as a contractor. But he's reluctant to take up the offer because it can affect his family... and he is not sure how he and Cat can work together when there's that chemistry between them...

Good amount of angst, but not too overwhelming. She's his boss's sister, he's not quite ready to leave the job... etc etc.  The tropes and tags are minimal, yet there's a complete plot.

GRR Reviews Wrong then Right by Jodi Watters

Wrong then Right is deeper than one first suspect, even though the setup seems to be a bit weird and FMC was unwilling to compromise her principles to the point of suffering.

Hope Coleson is rich, but she left it all behind rather than submit to the controlling life that wealth demanded. Unfortunately, she's having a rather bad day. As wait staff at a hotel, she went to visit a guest in the off-hours, and had a very memorable night with a hot guy who doesn't talk... then was wrongfully terminated. Which lead to her being evicted from her dumpy apartment. Her savings account also mysterious vanished. She had no choice but to sleep in her car and take up waitressing a classy strip-joint. One morning, when she was parked near her favorite house she dreamed of buying one day on her own money, she was startled away by a knock on the window... It was that guy who bedded her! When he learned he sorta caused her losing her job, he offered up his guest-room... He had plenty of space, and she... needed a place to stay. Then he learned her surname... Same name as his boss. He just slept with his boss's step-sister. This is not going to end well, esp. when Beckett can't trust another woman after the previous one betrayed him. Not that he can allow the situation to continue...

While I admire the principles of the FMC in not taking ANY of the family money, it's also a bit masochistic. However, the multi-layered angst was quite good, as each has multiple reasons not to fall for each other.

Category: Contemporary

Primary Plot: Can a woman down on her luck but holding onto her principles fall for a guy who is not supposed to love her?

Tropes: fish out of water, resort, fling to a thing, protector, woman in peril, boss's relative

GRR Reviews Above and Beyond (To Serve and Protect by Kathryn Shay

Above and Beyond is a bodyguard novel, with impeccable research that blended uncompromising realism with swooning affection.

Nick Marino was the top guy on president's Secret Service detail, but a crisis sent him, at the personal request of president Barton to guard the president's sister, Isabelle Barton, in upstate New York. Nick wanted to advance and there isn't much beyond guarding the president... except becoming Director of Secret Service, and this job would be great... if he can get over Isabelle the widow and her twins. Someone is threatening president Barton and his family. Not even FBI and Secret Service can find the source. Nick goes undercover as a carpenter, along with his cousin (as the summer sitter for the twins) and his disgraced brother, all in the Secret Service, protecting Isabelle, and not even Isabelle can ignore the sparks between her and Nick. But she's not really ready to date, and he's not ready to give up his career... And the threats are escalating...

The novel started off pretty slow, but the tension did ratchet up later. I find bad guys' motivation a bit nebulous, but a proper conspiracy often is. All in all, a good read.

Category: Romantic Suspense

Primary Plot: Secret Service agent must protect the president's sister, a widow, from a stalker threat... without falling for her himself...

Tropes: law enforcement, bodyguard, disguise, different worlds,
