Break the Rules managed to mix up several different levels of tension between the MMC and FMC to counter the attraction between them to be eventually overcome.
Bridget was down when she was passed over for the big promotion she was expecting. instead, the job was given to someone new brought in from the outside. She went out to have a blast, and found a guy, Jack, to hook up with. It was quite pleasurable. Come Monday, she found to her horror her one-night-stand was her new boss... AND the guy she lost the job to! Jack doesn't see why Bridget was so against the idea of getting back together, and sets out to woo her again...
There was the typical discrimination against the female gender, FMC's prior history only whispered about (she was framed, of course), taboo relationship with a fellow worker, esp. with a superior, and even the guy who was given the job when FMC was passed over for promotion. Add to that difficulty are hostile members of the team, lackadaisical attitude of management, lack of budget, and you got one heck of a stressful situation and a lot of tension. Later the circumstances even forced them to live together, which makes things even harder on them. Yet despite all this, FMC and MMC will eventually overcome all that and help each other de-stress at home, while trying to act normal during work. The working environment was done very well and I very much enjoyed the whole book.
