Paulina Ludzecky was forced to step into the shoes of her dead husband to run the company when both her husband and her twin sister's husband were killed in an auto accident. Three years later, the business is running well, the pain has faded, and she felt she was ready to try again when she met architect Adam Armstrong through work. Adam, however, is a blueblood, and typically mix with the tux and tie crowd, while she's a jeans and baggy coveralls kind of girl who gets her hands dirty in her projects. He wants her as he was intrigued by her direct no-nonsense attitude, but she kept him at arm's length, believing that once he's tired of her he'll leave and her kids don't need to be confused. How can he convince her he's serious?
The author's style is to have the two characters dance toward each other, but never quite touching, each denying their own emotions toward the other, until finally they can't deny it any longer. This may seem slow at times, as if the FMC was just struck by inferiority / inadequacy that she had to grow out of. It may take a little while to appreciate the charm of this style.
