GRR Review: His Favorite Mermaid by Jill Baker

At times dark, at times hopeful, and at time comical, His Favorite Mermaid by Jill Baker is an interesting tale of remembrance and nostalgia between two very damaged people brought together by circumstances that are both hilarious and tear-inducing, just as a good romcom is meant to do.

Tess Driscoll has a greeting card company that's about to be sued into the ground, and she needed the money she can get by selling the Key West house she could win in a contest by enlisting her former bestie, a self-proclaimed mermaid called Maybee. She's also the daughter of a con-man and used to run cons in Key West. Only after she "won" did she found out that the house was in far worse shape than her memories from childhood, and there's a no-sell clause in the contest rules, thus dashing her dreams, as the house is administered by Gabe Morales, former boat baby (evacuated from Cuba) whose parents never made it across. Gabe is also the nephew of the house's former owner, and oh-so-handsome, and runs the local newspaper and always dig for the truth. Tess and Gabe must deal with their attraction, their respective pasts, and the house that essentially held them prisoner to this island, as the hurricane approached...

While I like the cast, the complications, and the flashbacks to events that defined them both, and the approaching hurricane did add to the tension, the deus ex machina ending kinda left it fizzling. That's why this didn't get 5 stars.
