Call of the Dragon feels at time being a YA paranormal romance rather than adult paranormal romance, except for the sex scenes.
Rhia had been fleeing and fighting monsters that killed her mother as long as she can remember, until one day Drake found her and told her that she is the daughter of the Queen of Avalore, her "mother" was actually Queen's trusted confidant, and the Kingdom needs her now. But as they struggle to return to the Kingdom and fight off more troll attacks, they cannot deny their attraction to each other, even as they have to deal with a human traitor who may have assassinated the Queen and wanted to kill Rhia and allegedly take her place on the throne, but one hidden power Avalore folks have is they are Dragon-shifters... despite none of them had fully shifted for a long while. But desperate times calls for desperate measures.
While the world building was pretty well done, characters seem to only have two modes: normal, or barely in control of their shifter abilities, ready to roast everybody, friend or foe. Avalore folks seem with powers can actually hover and fly, and fling energy balls at enemies, and that's about it. Apparently physical warfare, i.e. blades or arrows and such are not in vogue, but trolls have nasty claws and poison. And basically, Rhia fell for the first person that was nice to her, basically, and can defend her (a little). It's just a bit too... simplistic.
