Vixen and the Vet has a somewhat unfortunate title, though it was meant to be a play on "The Beauty and the Beast", from which this novel was inspired by. The characters are interesting, though slightly overdramatic. It has a pretty standard "reporter vs recluse" plot. The darkest hour... didn't seem that dark...
Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by a source, returned as a disgraced ex-investigative reporter to her home of Danvers, Virginia ostensibly to help her little sister's wedding, but in reality, trying to prove herself worthy of a reporter position again. When a paper in Phoenix offered her a chance to write a July 4th Lifestyle article, Savannah chose to interview the local recluse, Asher Lee, who was disfigured by an IED. He came back and closed himself off, with only a housekeeper kept him company for the last eight years. Savannah somehow broke through, and Asher surprising himself, granted an interview, and as the article was serialized, they interviewed more, and slowly fell in love. When Savannah had to rewrite the story and ended up writing it as how she fell in love with the disfigured warrior... she did not tell him. He thought she was writing a piece on IEDs and the damage they do to the warriors. When the truth came out, and Savannah betrayed yet again, will their love survive? Or is this fairy tale going to get a sad ending?
The character of Savannah Carmichael was definitely not weak, but her motivations were a bit off which lead to her darkest hour. Her measure of her worth was approval by others, not realizing with no control over the content she can be betrayed at any time. Her beau, Asher Lee, trusted Savannah and when that trust was betrayed (though it wasn't really her fault), that lead to the darkest hour as well. His arc was rather vague. The grand gesture was vague as well, but appropriate given their respective backgrounds, though it sure took a long long time. Other than the initial meet-cute being slightly implausible (though it was explained that their mothers were friends). All in all, it is a very competent romance taking old classic fairy tales as inspiration, if a bit long.
