At Any Price chose the one controversial topic that will get the conservatives riled up: is a girl's v-card worth any particular price? But at its heart, it is about a rich alpha yet socially awkward billionaire who wants the girl he can't quite have. And as soon as the high concept was used, it was pretty much discarded, and it became the regular girl in need meets alpha billionaire, if heavily disguised and polished.
Mia Strong, popular gaming blogger (and online gamer) decided to auction off her v-card online, partly because she needed the money to pay off her mother's cancer treatment, and to save her bed and breakfast, but also to put her through medical school. AND her prior trauma made her believe she did not deserve love, and since she won't get any, she may as well sell the V-card and get whatever money she could out of it. But the winner, Adam Drake, is as handsome and rich as he is mysterious... He overcame horrible circumstances, including loss of a sibling, to make his millions in his 20's. And all his behavior toward Mia indicates he wants more than one night. What secret was Adam keeping, and can Mia go through with... whatever Adam was planning?
While I rather enjoy the beginning of the book, by about mid-book the book fell back to the tropes and even the revelations about Adam and his secrets (which does involve Mia) can't save me from feeling "I'm bored", and when the "secret" was revealed, the guy was basically playing puppetmaster (you'll see what I mean if you did reach the ending). I personally find that creepy, not swoon-y.
That the story of this couple has another 3 novels as sequels didn't help either.
But I like this cover a lot better than the previous one.
