GRR Reviews Kissed by a Cowboy (Redbud Trails Book by Lacy Williams

Kiss by a Cowboy managed to flip the trope, with the woman being the rich and powerful, while the guy was barely getting by, yet still romance each other from some childhood memories, because it's NOT about giving how much, but giving it your all.

Haley Carston is back in her hometown in rural Oklahoma when she found her aunt has terminal cancer. She left the town behind with a lot of bad memories, including a best friend Katie dead from a car accident. But the town was also where she gave her first kiss to Maddox Michaels, at the Prom. Haley did not count on seeing Maddox... Maddox was barely hanging on. He used to be somebody, in college with a football scholarship, being scouted by Division I school with a chance at NFL... It all went away when his sister (Haley's best friend) got pregnant, then died. Maddox's brother was seriously wounded at a rodeo and is sulking at home and recuperating, leaving Maddox to deal with Katie's daughter, who's also his niece. Maddox joined harvest crews working all over the South, barely getting by and keep the family farm running, while reminiscing how much did he have to give up... When Haley walked back into his life, wanting to help his niece get into the gourmet ice cream business. But can he swallow his pride and go after her, despite having nothing to offer her except his heart?

The push-pull is sincere, and fun, and the flashbacks were not jarring. The romance is just sweet without being too angst-y. And who can resist gourmet ice cream?
