GRR Reviews Wild Montana Skies (Montana Rescue) by Susan May Warren
Wild Montana Skies managed to weave a TON of romance trope (country music, fame, military, home-coming, PTSD, search and rescue, betrayal, secret baby, love interrupted...) into one coherent tale of two wounded lovers coming back to each other.
S&R pilot Kacey Fairing went home on leave to Mercy Falls, Montana. She has a bronze star for her rescue and survival after being shot down, but she still suffers PTSD and had problems sleeping. She ran from her hometown twelve years ago, away from her mistakes... Away from her daughter Audrey... But now she's back, at least for a little while, as a temp helo pilot for PEAK Rescue in Glacier National Park. Her daughter is all grown up, just at the point of trying to figure out her own life, why didn't she have a father, and perhaps, even whom to love, something Kacey hadn't yet figure out. She did not count on going home and ran into the man who broke her heart twelve years ago... Benjamin King, country music sensation. He got her pregnant, then on the night of her giving birth, he got drunk and got arrested. Then both left, he went to Nashville to chase his dreams, she went into the military to search for a place to belong, each believing the other had left. Ben is back home because he's in a bit of creative block, and he's trying to move his aging father Chet who had been injured and needs rehab, but Chet is not one to take injuries sitting down and soon injured himself even worse. But soon Ben realized Chet is trying to get him and Kacey back together. With the town threatened by flash floods, Kacey and Ben are forced to work together and figure out a plan on how to break the news to their daughter... if at all. But Ben has a career, and Kacey / Audrey aren't leaving this town. When Ben's co-star appeared in town hoping to drag him back to Nashville, things may get quite tricky indeed...
With so many angles, there is no dull moment in this book, as something is always happening. As soon as one problem was solved, a different problem came to the forefront. There was even a darkest hour, albeit not one where EVERYTHING went wrong. Though all the problem was solved by the end in one grand gesture by the guy. No, I'm not telling. It is due to the author's skill and polish to make such disparate elements work together in cohesion.
One thing about this author is this is often spiritual, i.e. often talks about God, but this one wasn't so... heavy-handed as in some of the other books. All in all, it's a good read, with very deft plotting.
