GRR Reviews Broken (Broken Trilogy Book 1) by J.L. Drake
WARNING: Ends on a cliffhanger
Broken enjoyed some good plot twists, but the author failed to create proper plot cutting points so the three novels can stand independently. Instead, we have basically a cliffhanger. Add to that somewhat lousy military writing, and we're left with mostly mediocre effort.
Savannah Miller was a party girl, daughter of mayor or New York, and a kidnap victim. She had been held for months, beaten, starved, and gotten to the point that she only hoped to die. Then she was rescued. As she slowly recovered from her ordeal, she realized her problems had not ended. She cannot go back to her old life, because there was something very wrong with her abduction... Someone made it way too easy. And she fell for the leader of the rescue group, Logan... but nothing was ever that simple...
The military operation that setup the cliffhanger really made no sense. What should have been an aborted mission was forced to continue for no particular reason, and the end result is a major darkest hour, that needn't have happened except for very poor choice of tactics. The story ended with a hint that something was not what it seemed.
All in all, the OTHER twists in the story managed to average the score out to "ok". I felt the romance was a bit forced.
