GRR Reviews Mercy and Mayhem: Men of Mercy by Lindsay Cross
Mercy and Mayhem tried to infuse some hard hitting military action with some interesting pairing of romance, where leader of a special outfit after a traitor spook falls for the beautiful pilot they had to drag along after their plane crashed. However, when the initial physical facts failed to line up with reality, it's rather hard to take the rest of the book seriously.
To recap, Mack Grey wanted revenge from an ex-spook who betrayed his team and endangered his family. He finally got a lead and put together a mission... His team of elite operators will conduct a HALO drop in Africa and corner the rat. He didn't even care his pilot is Marley Mitchell, a woman who wanted to go back to her baby girl. When Marley's co-pilot turned out to be a traitor, and the plane crashed in the middle of African jungle, leaving the team surrounded on all sides, Mack is Marley's only chance to get back home... if Mack doesn't lose his heart first...
The author Lindsay Cross have a problem with her villains... They are TOO evil and TOO capable. This one managed to bribe the co-pilot to not only sabotage the plane but ALSO leave a bomb (but enough time for everybody to jump!) But also somehow found Marley's family and threatened her girl to force Marley to betray the entire team. WTF? What kind of reach does this ex-spook have? Also, factual problems. at 30000 ft there's 1-3 minutes of usable consciousness. It's at 50000 ft that you have maybe 6-9 seconds. HALO jump can be from 15000 to 35000 ft. So the idea of everybody blacking out in like 3 seconds is bull****. Yet that's the heart of the setup, that the pilot blacked out, yet woke up enough to pull out just above the trees, and they still managed to parachute out before the plane crashed for real this time from the bomb. If that's not believable, the rest of the setup is definitely iffy.
After the two had some sexy time in the jungle without setting some sort of security, I decided the author doesn't really know military thinking and just stopped reading.
