Dhalia and her best friend Piggy (long story) went to Idaho for the summer and took on a Dept of Forestry contractor job, hoping for a change of pace from the Texas heat. Dhalia's husband had been dead three years... he ran off the road into a creek, and he had a DIFFERENT woman in the car with him (who didn't survive either). Dhalia's mixed ancestry (she's half Filipino, but born and grew up in Texas) made her the target of vicious whispers in the small town where her father ran the only (but struggling) grocery store... Dhalia didn't count on encountering the larger than life cowboy, Luke, head of the Double Deuce ranch, the biggest spread in town. But Luke's life ain't easy. He has a whole ranch to run, a son with developmental problems, and two daughters. His mother is also a total shrew. Luke needed a break, and a romp with the exotic Dhalia is exactly what each other needed. But when Dhalia's father had a stroke, and Luke's ex-wife launched a new campaign to discredit him, neither is ready for more... But are they ready for the consequences of their summer fling?
This is basically a star-crossed lovers (aka fated mates) story. I felt that Dhalia's racial angle, other than some vicious rumors ("Chinese prostitute") was not really used that much. Luke was the strong silent type that can't seem to explain his feelings, a bit of a cliche, but touching nonetheless. All in all, I guess it's above average.
