State of GRR: Slight signs of life, and some trimming needed

Sorry to keep you dear readers waiting, but here's an update.

I have finally got a new job and will slowly get back into reviewing books. It won't be multiple books per week, but it'll start back up again.

I have also noticed many reviews had been duplicated, so I will have to go on a purging journey as well.

I will be posting a few new reviews after this post. Yes, it has been a long 18+ months. But rest assured, I'm still reading and reviewing romance novels.

Regrettably, GRR will be going into hiatus after today

Due to unfortunate circumstances beyond one's control GRR is going into hiatus, at least for the immediate future. I lost the job that allowed me to listen to audiobooks while I work. I am going to update my skill set, and that will leave me no time to continue the reviews, at least for now.

Hopefully, once my employment status stabilizes I may find some time to continue the reviews. I want to reach my personal milestone of 3000 posted reviews. But until then... See you later, Romancelandia.

Pardon for Lack of Update

Caught a cold over the weekend and didn't post for a couple days. Sorry about that. Make-up posts to follow.

Apology: Forgot to Post Reviews for Two Whole Days...

Apparently, Avengers: Endgame has as much effect on my review posting as my sister's wedding. Hahaha!  Both managed to prevent me from posting reviews for the 2-day weekend.

But we're back in business. Three more reviews coming right up!

BTW, the movie's awesome.

One last update from my weekend, and on with the show...

Flew to Texas to attend my sister's wedding on Saturday. Unfortunately, DFW area was under a "ground hold" due to severe weather. Plane takeoff was delayed, then taxied, then went back to the gate. I ended up arriving FIVE HOURS LATE, missed the wedding completely, just went to the reception. Anyway, here she is:

Yes, that's my baby sister.

The flight back was completely uneventful. Though let's just say, sitting in cattle class (read: Economy / Coach) is not something you should endure for more than 3 hours. My knees are frozen stiff from being crammed against the seat in front. My seats won't incline as I paid the cheapest fare and ended up in the very back (no recline position).

AND I lost in Fire tablet upon arrival. *sigh*

Fortunately, I have a backup Fire tablet (the older Fire 7) I can use to keep my reading going. So don't fret. You'll still get your updates. Any way, onto the reviews.

Site Update: 2000th Review Posted!

This is the 2014th post on this blog, and the 14th "misc" (non-review post). Which means #GuyReviewsRomance has just posted its 2000th review!

As this weekend happens to be my sister's wedding, I am skipping Saturday (13th) and Sunday (14th) posting of three daily reviews.

Expect the reviews to resume on Monday the 15th, which is Tax Day.

If you are wondering how did I manage to review 2000 novels in less than two years... I read about 3-4 books a day. Having Kindle Unlimited ($10 a month, less if you find the occasional multi-month discounts) with my Fire 8 tablet is very helpful, but not required.

I've explained before how to fill up your library with FREE books. Also, your local library may also have ebooks you can borrow.

The march to 3000th review shall start on Monday!

Happy reading.

Welcome to 2019, and a site update

Welcome to GuyReviewsRomance (GRR) blog's first post for 2019.

GRR blog currently has 1712 posts, of which 1700 are book reviews and 12 are misc update posts. This post will be the 1713th post.

GRR will go a little slower in 2019, three reviews per day.  I still have a good number of reviews backlog I can post.

There is a lean toward 4-star reviews, as of today.

1/5: 39

Avoid at all costs, lacks plot, character, both, or just horrible writing/theme

2/5: 174

Severe flaw(s) in the book, either stupid character(s) or stupid plot(s)

3/5: 514

Mediocre book, or book with both brilliance and flaw that averaged out

4/5: 798

Good novel, but short of that extra something to be extraordinary, or have a flaw that prevented it from being great

5/5: 172

Excellent book with good characters and plot twists

Happy Thanksgiving, and a site update

First, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

According to the Blogger control panel, this post is the 1510th post on this blog. Discounting the various announcements and updates, that means there is definitely more than 1500 reviews posted on this blog! And that is a milestone indeed.

I also need to make an update to a previous announcement. About a month or so ago, Amazon, without any explanation, deleted all of my Amazon reviews. When I pressed them on a reason, they sent me a form letter that accused me of making "incentivized reviews" (i.e. someone paid me).

As a result, I have removed all links from this blog to my Amazon reviews.

A few weeks later, my reviews were restored, no explanation was ever offered. No apology, no acknowledgment, not even "sorry for the inconvenience while we investigated this matter."

After further consideration, I will not be linking to my Amazon reviews anymore. Furthermore, reviews will appear here. Selected reviews may appear over there, generally, only 4 or 5 star rated ones, but it'd be my choice, no theirs. After all, if I really post reviews as fast as I read them, they'll likely accuse me of spamming them again.

Also, since I read 1-4 books a day, finding time to search for common themes to group them on Twitter then here is becoming more of a time sink than I anticipated.

Instead, my goal is to clear my "to be posted" queue (and there are DOZENS of reviews to be posted), that I will be posting them at least 5 to 10 a day until they are cleared. THEN I will post reviews as I read them.

To save time, the "one-liner" summary will no longer be posted either. The main body already contains a summary, albeit, not quite as short.

So you will see a lot more reviews appearing on this blog. They will just not be themed.

Quite a lot more reviews, in fact.

Noticed a problem with the mobile version of the website

I blog on the desktop, so I didn't really test the mobile version of this blog, until the other day, and it was then I noticed not only there is no search function in the mobile site, the layout lost my tags. This is obviously unacceptable to me and I am looking into solutions, but it may take me a while, as I'm not a Blogger guru.

In the near future, I'll have to sort through my tropes, clean up my tags, and provide better linking.

UPDATE: Changing the mobile theme to "dynamic view" got the tags back. Search function seems to be hiding. Will need to do further research.

UPDATE 2: Search is in the upper right corner in the mobile theme. Doesn't have the subscribe buttons though. I guess I may have to move them to pages to make them work on mobile.

EDITORIAL: Amazon's little review problem, and shameless self-promo

Amazon really does rank its reviews through their own algorithm, mostly on the number of upvotes.

About two weeks ago, I broke into the "top 1000" reviews barrier. I was like #983 or something for a week or so.

But I have a lot of books review backlog I haven't posted, so over the span of a week or so, I added about 30-40 reviews. I have another 100+ to go.

Then my "Top 1000 Reviewer" badge disappeared. To my dismay, I found out my reviewer ranking is now #1003. It was clear that my new reviews have "diluted" my ratio and caused my ranking to drop.

So if you are reading this, here's a little request:

Follow me on Amazon. My Amazon profile is here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/amzn1.account.AHNELC2DTIYZA4JO37YPWB7QT6SQ

Check out some of my reviews. If you think you agree with my review(s), give me a "helpful" vote. Obviously, you'll need to be an existing Amazon member. Yes, I really do have 1700+ reviews on Amazon. I don't spam. Most of them are verified purchases, and most of those that are not verified purchases are books obtained via Prime Lending and such.

And I promise NOT to send you ANYTHING, not just spam, but ANYTHING. (I can't control what Amazon sends you)

So why follow me on Amazon? My book reviews actually are posted on Amazon FIRST. The blog posts come almost a month later. Yes, I have a lot of catching up to do.

That's it, really. Get alerted to my latest reviews.

One of these days I'll have to mirror my reviews on Goodreads, but that's weeks if not months in the future.

Anyway, back to book reviews...

8.12 To the extent that the legal basis for our processing of your personal information is consent, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal will not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal.
8.13 You may exercise any of your rights in relation to your personal data by written notice to us

GRR EDITORIAL: Cocky-gate needs to be nipped in the bud

If you read romances, you've no doubt by now heard of "cocky-gate". The TL;DR version is an author called Faleena Hopkins managed to get a trademark on the word "cocky" (she wrote a series called the Cocker Brothers, and they are all names Cocky this and Cocky that), not just when it's specific to romance, but in general. And she's threatening to sue other authors who used the word "cocky" in their book titles, even if they are published BEFORE her trademark. For a more detailed view, read this Vox article.  And another view from Firebrand Publishing

I have yet to review a book in the Cocky series, but I have reviewed one of her earlier books, "You Don't Know Me".  The characters are mostly douchebags or hormonal driven. At best, it was an average book and I may be generous here with my rating.

So why her sudden urge to trademark the word "cocky"? I can't claim to know her mind, but I do know of a similar circumstance.

Did you know someone tried to trademark the word "scam" as for use on the WWW? No? Had he succeeded, no one can use the word "scam" on the Internet. That'd be OUTRAGEOUS, right? You thought I was kidding? Nope. See for yourself.

Robert L Craddock tried to register an internet trademark for the word "scam" back in 2012.
You can trademark a lot of things. The Fedex logo and the term Fedex is a trademark. Indeed, there are boardgames and colognes currently bearing the trademark "scam". But this is a character mark. In fact, in the application, the applicant, Robert L. Craddock stated specifically that

"[the word "scam'] has become a recognized that that the services we provide give assured protection against. This term has a negative sound and it is for this reason that it is imperative that because this word is used in a negative way and for the last 15-years has been the center of the positive work we do for seeral hundred clients that we need to apply for protection on the use of the word mark SCAM."
I've copied that section EXACTLY as is, including the non-sensical un-grammatical language.

You can draw your own conclusion about what sort of companies would need Craddock's services to protect them from the word "scam". To me, this means he intends to PREVENT OTHER PEOPLE from using the word "scam", esp. in relation to his clients.  Anyway, that particular trademark was denied.

It was perhaps, karmic retribution that Craddock later ended up serving a six-month Federal sentence for scamming the Federal government by falsely claiming over $135000 in damage from a Florida Gulf oil spill that happened in 2010.  Craddock was also a major player in the ZeekRewards ponzi scheme that rocked the US back in 2012.

And the parallel to cocky-gate is a little thin, but it's there.

Anyway... this is that GRR has to say about cocky-gate:

IMHO, the trademark on "cocky" should be invalidated for the following reasons.

It's too generic

"Cocky" -- (adj.) conceited or arrogant, especially in a bold or impudent way

That would have described vast majority of the male main characters in romance novels, IMHO, esp. the "billionaire" and "alpha male" romances (or even the mountain man, MC, and military ones too)

It's too underhanded

According to the Vox article, the instigator, Faleena Hopkins, gave no time for other authors to change titles and covers. She, or her representative, directly contacted Amazon and as a result, the affected authors had their book suspended (i.e. cannot be purchased), and it's not know how many other authors or eBook vendors (such as B&N's Nook platform, iTunes Books, and Google Play Books) are affected. The situation was so bad, Romance Writers of America, the industry organization, had to intervene with Amazon, and has hired a lawyer to review the situation.

It sets a dangerous precedent

If one author can trademark a common word in romance, what's to prevent someone trademark some generic term in other genres? Like "Warp speed" for science fiction? Or perhaps "AI drones" for military fiction?

Join the petition to invalidate her trademark.

We're coming up at 1000th post, and 1000th review here on GuyReviewsRomance!

This will be the 999th post on this blog. And with 6 more reviews coming down the pipeline today, that will mark the 1000th post and 1000th review made by Guy Reviews Romance!

This also marks a tempo change in the blog. I am getting close to posting all of my backlog reviews, so starting Monday, the publishing schedule will be reduced to two reviews per day, instead of six. There will be occasional "theme days" where I'll post more than two a day for reviews of the same genre, like "romantic suspense" or "paranormal" and so on, but those will be the exception, rather than the rule.

I really do read every one of these books (unless it was utter garbage, and that'd be in the review itself) and I've enjoyed a majority of them. I hope you've enjoyed my blog and here's to another thousand reviews!

You can also find me reviewings books (and more) on Amazon.

How to fill your virtual romance bookshelf for FREE

GRR has downloaded according to Amazon, 1766 digital books in 2017 alone, and reviewed several hundred romances. Over the coming months, GRR plans to share all those reviews with the readers. How was GRR able to afford all these romances? By keeping track of FREE book giveaways. Now GRR shares those secrets with you:

One Hundred Free Books  (ohfb.com)

Specifically, https://ohfb.com/category/romance/ is where you should go for the most free romances and similar items. Not all are free, but there are new entries every day that not even I can review them all.  Needless to say, there are also plenty of OTHER genres for you to check out. Links to Amazon directly, just click on Amazon to download.  You can also get a newsletter, but they don't segregate by genre. Browsing is better.

InstaFreebie.com

Enter your email (for mailing list) to claim a book, then follow instructions to get it into your reader.  Process is not as smooth as OHFB, but you get books often not available anywhere else. You also sign up for the author's own announcement list. Be sure to sign up for the giveaways, which signs you up for a bit more mailing announcements.

You may want to use a separate email address to keep these from flooding your inbox. Signing up for a giveaway means signing up for newsletters from ALL of the authors that participated.

GRR 400th review posted!

As of now, Guy Reviews Romance just posted its 403rd review. At six reviews posted per day, it will be less than three months when GRR reaches 1000 reviews.

And let me assure you, I really did read every single one of these novels. Some more than once. AND I read other books too.

Hope you enjoy my reviews so far, and here's to many more to come.

Guy Reviews

Site Update: Additional labels being added to all reviews

After reader feedback, it's been decided that all reviews should include additional labels / keywords / tags so readers can drill down to specific tropes more easily. This process is ongoing and may take several weeks, due to over 100 reviews already posted.

The "six reviews per day" update should not be affected.

Feel free to suggest missing tags with the comment form.

Introduction and Welcome

Welcome to "Guy Reviews Romances" blog, where I, a guy, reviews a ton of romances. Yes, I read them.

This is an extension of my voracious reading appetite. I generally read two to three books a day, of all genres. I wish to understand what makes romance so... irresistible, that it comprises of ONE THIRD of all published fiction in the US.

Many of these reviews are also posted on my Amazon review page.

Every once in a while, I may lament on certain insights I have gained.
